Cosenza is the most important cultural and economic centre of Calabria. It stands in the Valley of Crati, on the confluence with the Busento river, encircled by hill and mountains. The creator of the old town centre was Frederick II of Swabia. Under Swabian, Anjovin and Spanish domination it became the most important town in Calabria and with the most direct contact with Naples. The sixteenth century witnessed a great cultural flowering partly as the result of the founding of an accademy which is still active today, and to the work of Bernadino Telesio. it was not for nothing referred to as "The Athens of Calabria".
Of notable importance are the various edifices belonging to noble families, such as Vaccaro Palace, Sersali palace and Martirano Palace, both with fine stone portals, and finally Serra Palace. Then, in the square where the Splendid government Palace stands, we can also admire the Rendano Theatre. Among the monumental edifices of Cosenza is the fifth-century Cathedral entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1184 and inaugurated in the presence of the Emperor Frederick II of Swabia. The adjacent Arcivescovile Palace houses the reliquary cross considered one of the most precious works of art in Calabria.
